Research Fee Schedule

The Office of Clinical Trial Activation provides tools for study teams to use when OCTA is not preparing the full study budget (e.g. non-profit studies, grant-funded studies, or budgets developed by the study department). The research fee schedule may be used to prepare the patient care costs within a study budget. The patient care costs listed in the research fee schedule should be used in coordination with the budgeting resources & fees on the Budget Resources page.

Important Information about Research Fee Schedule:

This is the top CPT codes used in research at UCSF in the previous fiscal year. The research fee schedule does not include research recharges. Please contact the service area directly to inquire about recharge rates.

Confidentiality: The research fee schedule is confidential and provided solely for reference and internal budgeting purposes. It should not be shared with third parties.

Annual Increases: The research fee schedule is subject to annual adjustments in accordance with the standard practices of the medical center.

What's Included in the Research Fee Schedule:

The research fee schedule encompasses both hospital and professional patient care rates. These rates apply to government/non-profit and non-government/industry sponsored research conducted at UCSF locations in the East Bay and West Bay. Please note that the research fee schedule rates do not apply to UCSF affiliate sites.

Some procedures will only have a hospital charge, while others will have both a hospital charge and a professional charge. The professional charge remains the same for both East Bay and West Bay, only the hospital charge varies due to different facility/hospital rates. Steps to put together patient care costs for a study budget:

STEP 1: Gather the protocol required procedures from the study protocol:

Government / Non-Profit funding:

  • Study-required procedures are based on study team/PI review of protocol.
  • Note: For funding proposals, a Coverage Analysis is not required, once awarded use the Coverage Analysis Determination Form to determine whether your study requires Coverage Analysis.

Non-Government / Industry funding:

  • Use the Coverage Analysis Determination Form to determine whether your study requires Coverage Analysis.
  • Study-required procedures are based on items and services research paid, having a billing designation of R = bill to the sponsor, in finalized coverage analysis
  • Determine the applicable rates for the study budget based on factors such as government or industry-sponsor and location (East Bay or West Bay rates).

STEP 2: To get price estimates for procedures that involve multiple CPT codes (like bone marrow biopsy and aspirate, lumbar puncture, liver or kidney biopsy, or any procedure involving anesthesia, the operating room, specialty room, treatment room, or recovery room/post-anesthesia care unit), please use the Procedural Pricing Request Form.

STEP 3: Refer to the research fee schedule and obtain the associated hospital billing (HB) and professional billing (PB) fees for the protocol required procedures outlined in the study and have a billing designation of R = bill to the sponsor.

STEP 4: Input the prices obtained from the research fee schedule into the study budget.
